How is a credit union different from a bank?
Like other financial institutions, the Credit Union accepts deposits and makes loans--but we are NOT in business to make a profit. Most banks and savings & loans are owned by groups of stockholders whose interests include earning a healthy return on their investments. Many stockholders do not even use the services of that institution. As a member of the Credit Union, you, along with other members, own and operate the State Employees' Credit Union.

Who can join the Credit Union?
To be a member of the State Employees' Credit Union, common bond eligibility requirements must be met.

Why do I have to have a share account, I only want checking?
Membership in the Credit Union is obtained by opening a Share account with a minimum deposit of $25. Deposits are actually shares that have a par value of $5 each. Therefore, at least 5 shares must be purchased initially to obtain membership. Only one share is required for initial membership for children under 13 years of age.

Are my deposits insured?
Member accounts are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), a component of NCUA, which was established by Congress on October 19, 1970.

What is the minimum amount required to open a checking account at the Credit Union?
There is no minimum amount required to open a Credit Union checking account.

What are the service fees for my accounts?
The Credit Union prides itself in having low service fees. These fees are subject to change daily. Our current rates may be found under Rates and Fees.

Can I set up a direct deposit or automated draft from my account?
Members can enjoy the convenience, security, and prompt delivery of direct deposit and avoid the hassle of mailing checks monthly by establishing electronic debits and credits.

How do I apply for a loan?
Members can apply for a loan at a local branch, by contacting the Call Center, or online in Member Access. Loan applications may also be downloaded and completed for later submission to the branch or Call Center.

Does the Credit Union have a credit card program?
As part of our commitment to provide convenient, low cost financial services, the credit union offers a competitive credit card program.

Can I wire funds from my account to another institution?
To accommodate members who occasionally have an urgent need to send money fast, the Credit Union offers wire transfer services.

Can I purchase US Savings Bonds through the Credit Union? Can I buy them online?
The Credit Union sells Series EE (regular) and I (indexed) Savings Bonds and redeems Series E, EE, I and Savings Notes ranging from $50 to $10,000. Series I and Series EE Bonds may also be purchased online directly from the Federal Treasury Department.

Does the Credit Union offer any type of investment accounts?
State Employees' Credit Union has partnered with ShareBuilder to offer members the ability to purchase stocks on a recurring or real-time basis at extremely competitive prices.

Does the Credit Union sell insurance products?
The Credit Union wants to provide members with a single source for financial services. In addition to deposit accounts, loan products, investments and budgeting, the Credit Union offers a variety of insurance products to protect members' assets.

What is Member Access?
Members of State Employees' Credit Union can access account information via the Internet using Member Access.

Is there a charge for using Member Access?
No. Member access is a free service offered by the Credit Union.

How do I access my accounts online?
To sign on to Member Access, members must have a Credit Union debit card and an ASK SECU PIN.

What if I have forgotten my Member Access password?
Members who either forget their password or are locked out of Member Access can have their password reset by contacting the Call Center for assistance. Members are allowed three attempts before access is denied.

Are my online communications secured?
The Credit Union uses the latest industry standards to protect account information online. All account information is safe-guarded with SSL (Secure Socket Layer), 128-bit encryption and stringent firewall policies.

Can I view my checks online? What about monthly statements?
Check images and statement images are available in Member Access.

How do I set up Money or Quicken to download my accounts?
The Credit Union supports several versions of Money and Quicken. Setup instructions are available for each.

Can I access my accounts using Money or Quicken?
All checking, share, IRA, money market, certificate, personal loan, and mortgage loan accounts available through Member Access can be downloaded using Money and Quicken.
